Model fitment
| Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution | Year guide | Chassis |
|---|---|---|
| Evo 4 / Evolution IV | 1996–1998 | CN9A |

The year ranges are a guide. Check the model and engine fitted rather than relying on registration year alone. For Evo 8 and Evo 9 please see our Evo 8/9 timing belt kit.
If your car has an engine conversion or its balance shafts are already deleted please contact us before ordering so we can confirm the parts needed.
Balance shaft delete option
To delete the balance shafts select “Balance shaft delete option” above the Add to Cart button. The following parts are added to the basic kit:
- Balance shaft cap
- Balance stub shaft
- Balance shaft bearings for blocking the relevant oil gallery feeds
The delete parts arent a substitute for correct oil gallery preparation. Follow the conversion instructions for fitting the bearings and stub shaft. The oil pump must still operate correctly after the shafts are removed.
Optional oil pump and gasket
Select “Add oil pump & gasket” if these are required for your rebuild. Its worth checking the existing pump and front case during dismantling. Replacing the sprocket alone doesnt repair wear inside the pump.
Optional AC delete Contitech belt
Select “Add AC delete Contitech belt” if you are removing the air conditioning compressor. This is a separate auxiliary belt for the revised belt route. It doesnt replace the timing belt or balance shaft belt.
Balance shaft timing can look correct and still be wrong
When retaining the balance shafts the oil pump sprocket mark alone doesnt confirm the shaft is in the correct phase. The Mitsubishi workshop procedure includes a check through the cylinder block access hole. Complete that check before fitting and tensioning the belt.
In an EvolutionM discussion about oil pump timing an owner raised this exact point while refitting the belt. A balance shaft can be out of phase even though the visible sprocket mark lines up. This is a useful check when investigating vibration after a timing belt job.
Follow the Mitsubishi procedure for your engine for belt tension, tensioner adjustment and tightening settings. Complete the prescribed manual rotation and final timing checks before starting. Inspect nearby seals for leaks during the job so oil doesnt contaminate the new belts.
